Every year at the Indian T20 League auction, purchasing battles for certain players go on for long between different clubs and some of these players end up being bought for an unbelievable price. These players become millionaires in no time and get substantial price tags attached to their names.
In the 2021 mini-auction, Chris Morris became the most expensive player in auction history, breaking the record of Yuvraj Singh from back in 2015. The likes of Kyle Jamieson, Glenn Maxwell and Jhye Richarson also attracted some big money from this year’s auction.
Here is a list of the 5 most expensive or prized players in the history of the Indian T20 League:
1. Chris Morris (16.25 crores, bought by Rajasthan)
Chris Morris is currently the most expensive player in the Indian T20 League history. After an intense round of bidding between Mumbai, Rajasthan, Chennai and Bangalore, the all-rounder was eventually sold to Rajasthan for an astounding ₹16.25 crore, after having started off at a base price of ₹75 lakh.
Morris was with Bangalore last season and is returning to Rajasthan after a long gap of six years. He has replaced Yuvraj Singh as the most expensive player in the league’s history.
2. Yuvraj Singh (16 crores, bought by Delhi)
Yuvraj Singh holds the record of being the most expensive Indian player to have been purchased in the league when he was signed by Delhi for ₹16 crores at the 2015 auction. It was, at that time, the highest any team had ever paid for a player.
Yuvraj was with Bangalore previously and played for Delhi for just one season before moving to Hyderabad. He retired after the 2019 season.
3. Pat Cummins (15.5 crore, bought by Kolkata)
Australian pace bowler Pat Cummins is the third most expensive player in the league’s history. In the year 2020 auction, he was bought by Kolkata for a whopping price of ₹15.5 crores.
He has played for Kolkata during the 2014 and 2015 seasons and for Delhi in 2017. He was the most expensive overseas player in the league’s auction history before this year.
4. Kyle Jamieson (15 crores, bought by Bangalore)
Kyle Jamieson, the tall New Zealand pace-bowling all-rounder, is now the most expensive New Zealand player in the league’s auction history. He went to the Bangalore team for a price of ₹15 crore, after having started off at a base price of ₹75 lakh.
He has been a sensation ever since making his debut in international cricket against India last year. Given his ability to take wickets and hit long sixes, the lanky bowler is expected to be a crucial part of the Bangalore team. This will be his debut season in the league.
5. Ben Stokes (14.5 crores, bought by Pune)
Ben Stokes is the fifth most expensive player in the Indian T20 League history. The Pune team had purchased the English all-rounder for ₹14.5 crore back in the 2017 auction.
That was the debut season for him in the league, where he went onto win the Most Valuable Player award. He played for Rajasthan after that season and is one of their key players in the upcoming season.
