One of the standout fixtures on the weekend in the Spanish League will take place as Atletico Madrid welcome Barcelona at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night.
Atletico had an impressive start to the season, winning five and drawing two of their seven matches to sit third in the table, just three points off leaders Real Sociedad with two games in hand. They will bring a four-game winning run in the league into this contest, including a thumping 4-0 success over Cadiz before the international break.
Incredibly, Atletico Madrid have not lost in the league since losing 1-0 away to Real Madrid on Feb 1. The team’s Champions League form has not been perfect – collecting just four points from three matches.
Barcelona entered the international break with a thumping 5-2 win over Real Betis, which was their first win in the league since the start of October. A record of three wins, two draws, and two defeats from seven matches has left them in the eighth spot in the table, nine points behind Atletico Madrid on the same number of games.
The European form has been perfect for Barcelona – winning all of their three games scoring nine goals in the process. This game will be a huge test for the Catalans since they already lost the El Clasico against Real Madrid in-game week seven.
The previous meeting between these two sides earlier in July this year ended in a 2-2 draw with Saul scoring a brace for Atletico and Messi scoring for Barcelona.
In the last 60 fixtures played between the two teams, Barcelona have won 30 matches as opposed to Atletico Madrid’s 15 victories. 15 games have been drawn.
Atlético Madrid are unbeaten in their last 23 LaLiga games (W14 D9), their longest ever run without defeat in the competition, and the longest current such run across the top five European leagues.
Atlético de Madrid have failed to win in their last 20 LaLiga games against Barcelona (D6 L14). Also, they are winless in their last 10 home games against Barcelona (D3 L7), failing to score more than once in any of those games.
Atlético de Madrid have scored 17 goals and conceded just two in seven LaLiga games this season, their best goal difference tally at this stage in the top-flight since the 1995/96 campaign (+15 – GS17 GC2), winning the double that season (LaLiga and Copa del Rey).
Barcelona have only won one of their last five LaLiga games (D2 L2), 5-2 against Real Betis in the last matchday, after winning six of their previous seven in the competition.
Barcelona’s L Messi has scored 12 goals in 17 league appearances against Atlético Madrid, more than any other player, and he is also the player to have scored the most league goals against J Oblak (eight goals in 11 games).

- Atletico Madrid form guide: W-D-W-W-W
- Barcelona form guide: W-W-D-W-L
Both sides will be without some key players on Saturday, but there will still be plenty of quality on the field, and a draw would not be the worst result for both teams.
The onus will be on L Messi yet again to break down what is likely to be a strong Atletico Madrid defense.
