The first Der Klassiker of the season is here as Borussia Dortmund play hosts to Bayern Munich in a top-of-the-table clash at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening.
Borussia Dortmund have had a near-perfect start to their Bundesliga season, winning five of their six league matches so far. The blip in the record came in a 2-0 loss at Augsburg in game week two. They have conceded only two goals in the season so far, keeping five clean sheets.
Similarly, Bayern Munich have 15 points and lead the Bundesliga due to their superior goal difference to Dortmund’s. Bayern’s only loss was a 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim in the same weekend when Dortmund lost at Augsburg. They are scoring an average of four goals per game and will be confident of breaking Dortmund’s defensive resolve.
Both teams are coming into this game with comfortable away wins in the Champions League in midweek. Bayern were made to work by RB Salzburg in Austria, but eventually they breezed through the Austrian champions in the last quarter to win 6-2. Borussia Dortmund beat Club Brugge 3-0 in Belgium and went top of their Champions League group, thanks to a brace from E Haaland.
In the last game between the two sides, J Kimmich’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win at the Westfalenstadion.
This will be the 105th Bundesliga meeting between these two teams. Bayern have been the absolute favorites, winning 49 games. Borussia Dortmund have managed 26 victories, and 29 games have ended in a draw so far.
Bayern have won all three competitive games against Dortmund. They won the two Bundesliga games by an aggregate scoreline of 5-0 and beat them 3-2 in the Supercup this season.
Bayern’s J Kimmich is level with T Müller at the top of their club’s assist charts (both on four). In five league games this season, Kimmich has recorded more than half as many assists than he managed last season (seven). R Lewandowski has scored 18 goals in 21 competitive games against his former club. He has been in excellent form for Bayern this season, rattling in 10 goals in five appearances, including hat-tricks in two of his last three Bundesliga games.
Dortmund have won two of their last three home games against Bayern: 3-2 in the Bundesliga in Nov. 2018 and 2-0 in the Supercup in Aug. 2019 (the other game being a 1-0 league loss in May 2020).
Dortmund’s M Hummels scored the second brace of his Bundesliga career in the win over Bielefeld. Norwegian E Haaland has five league goals to his name. He has hit the back of the net in three of his four Bundesliga starts this season, and has two assists to his name, matching his total from 2019/20.
Borussia Dortmund have the best defense in the Bundesliga this season (two goals conceded) and they could equal the league record of five consecutive clean sheets against Bayern. Bayern’s 24 goals from six games is also a new league record.

- Borussia Dortmund form guide: W-W-W-W-L
- Bayern Munich form guide: W-W-W-W-W
With M Hummels’s involvement not certain, Borussia Dortmund are not preparing for the game in the best possible way. The spotlight will most certainly be on the two strikers, E Haaland and R Lewandowski, to find the back of the net on Saturday.
The two sides are evenly matched, but Bayern have the mental edge of performing in big games. Dortmund have suffered huge defeats in recent times in this matchup, while Bayern Munich are a well-oiled machine that keep churning out wins. We are in for an entertaining match and a narrow victory is predicted for the Bavarians.
