Indian T20 League 2021 Indefinitely Suspended Due To Covid-19

BCCI has decided to suspend the ongoing 14th edition of the Indian T20 League for an indefinite period. It all started on 3rd May when two players of the Kolkata franchise, Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, were tested Covid-19 positive. This led to the match between Kolkata and Bangalore being rescheduled to a later date.

It was followed by the news of Chennai’s bowling coach, Lakshmipathy Balaji, and a member of the support staff testing positive for the virus. After the outbreak, the Chennai team went into self-quarantine and decided not to participate in the Rajasthan vs. Chennai match, which was scheduled for 5th May.

A day later, the news of Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi’s Amit Mishra being tested positive for COVID-19 broke. GIven the breach in the bio-bubble and the sudden spike in the number of positive cases, BCCI had no option other than to suspend the tournament for an indefinite time.

"The organizing committee does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in the whole tournament. This decision is taken keeping the safety, health and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind. These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times. The board will do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all the participants of the league," read a statement from the BCCI.
