To say that fans of these two teams are surprised by the league table would be an understatement. Tamil, bottom of the table in each of their 3 previous seasons in the league, are the in-form team along with Patna. Bengal, the defending champions, have had a shocking season, losing 5 matches out of 8. When they meet in Match 51 of the Indian Kabaddi League at the Sheraton Grand Whitefield in Bengaluru on 13th January, Tamil know that a victory here will almost certainly help them seal a play-off spot while ending Bengal’s ill-fated title defence.

It’s hard to put into words just how poor Bengal have been after starting with 2 straight wins. Maninder Singh has been superb, and there have been moments of brilliance from Mohammad Nabibakhsh, but the other raiders just haven’t turned up. The defence has made just 56 successful tackles, the worst in the league.

Tamil, galvanised by the excellent defending of Surjeet Singh, have won 3 of their last 5, and have lost just once all season. They average only 18.5 raid points a game – only Manjeet has more than 50 points – but their 86 successful tackles is second only to Patna. From being the league’s easy-beats, they’re now one of the hardest teams to defeat.

Bengal have had it all their own way in this rivalry, but those days seem a long way off now. This is a different time, and a very different Tamil team.

K Prapanjan, who has since moved to the Tamil team, was the star for Bengal the first time these two teams met in the 2019 season, scoring 10 points in a comfortable win. The second contest, with Maninder Singh out injured for Bengal, was a lot closer. But Mohammad Nabibakhsh, who would go on to star in the knockouts, led the way with 7 points as they completed another clean sweep of the Tamil team.

  • Match 64: Bengal 35 – 26 Tamil
  • Match 128: Bengal 33 – 29 Tamil

Top Fantasy Picks

  • Surjeet Singh has 30 successful tackles so far in the tournament, 6 tackles more than anyone else. The entire Bengal team has only 56. More importantly, Surjeet’s leadership has transformed a team that only had a culture of losing. Only Patna defended as well as Tamil, and Surjeet’s 8 tackles in a 45-26 thrashing of Haryana epitomized this new grit.

  • Mohammad Nabibakhsh had a terrible game in the loss to Puneri. It’s no coincidence either that Bengal have lost the matches where he has either been absent or below his best. But even in what has been a poor season for the defending champions, his numbers are excellent – 49 points, a raiding strike-rate of 54 and an outstanding tackle strike-rate (62).

  • Maninder Singh has put together another fine individual campaign, despite Bengal losing 4 of  their last 5 games. The support has been really poor, but Maninder has tried to keep Bengal in games with his quickness of thought and feet. Even in the shocking loss to Puneri, he had 13 points from 17 raids.
