Aiden Markram – Future Proteas Star
Though he was nearly 23 when he made his international debut, South Africa’s selectors had seen something in Aiden Markram long before that. As much as Kagiso Rabada’s bowling, it was Markram’s batting and leadership that were crucial to South Africa winning the Under-19 World Cup in 2014. Given their struggles in global competitions over the years, that tournament marked something of a breakthrough, though neither he nor Rabada has managed to deliver such performances (yet) on the biggest stages in senior cricket.
Markram first impressed as a Test opener, but his struggles in Asia made many wonder whether he could be seen as a long-term prospect. It took longer for him to establish himself in the white-ball teams, though he has been most consistent so far in the T20I arena. Given the number of seniors that South Africa have lost to retirement, the shortest format may well represent the team’s greatest chance of success in the immediate future.
Aiden Markram: Recent Times
Markram didn’t sit idle during the pandemic either. He used the downtime to work on his technique and was a markedly more convincing batter against Pakistan’s spinners in 2021. Though South Africa lost the Test series, a hundred and a half century went some way to answering his critics.
Markram had to bide his time to make an impact in the Indian T20 League. An average stint with the Punjab team in the second half of the 2021 season was enough to spark a minor bidding war during the 2022 auction. It was the Hyderabad team that prevailed, and Markram repaid their faith with some fine innings in the first half of the tournament. For now, though, there’s a T20 World Cup to look forward to, as South Africa seek to change a miserable script in the biggest events.

Aiden Markram - Key Skills and Strengths
With the notable exception of AB de Villiers, who could do it all, and Hashim Amla, whose batting could be as beautiful as poetry, South African batting has usually had a reputation for dourness. When Aiden Markram was given his first cap in 2017, it represented quite a departure from that stereotype. Markram was an aggressive opener, fond of playing expansive strokes through the off side, and someone the selectors saw as adding extra dynamism to the side. It didn’t hurt that he could occasionally chip in with his off-spin and he is a superb fielder. From a young age, he was also viewed as a future captain.
Aiden Markram Awards and Achievements
Despite making an immediate impression after making his debut for the South African cricket teamSouth African cricket team, Markram has sometimes found international cricket a real challenge. After making just 84 runs in 8 innings across tours of Sri Lanka (2018) and India (2019), questions were raised about his batting against spin. But he went to Pakistan in 2021 and scored a superb century. He hasn’t had much success in the ODI arena, but is now a key part of the Proteas’ T20 side as they prepare for the World Cup in Australia later this year. Markram, who has experience of winning an ICC event as a youngster, will hope he can replicate that success at the senior level.
Here are some of Markram’s biggest records and achievements in international cricket:
-
Markram was their captain when South Africa won the Under-19 World Cup in the UAE in 2014. He was also the team’s leading run scorer in the tournament.
-
His T20I average of 42.47 is the best for any South African batter.
-
Among South African captains, only Graeme Smith was younger than Markram when he captained the side against India in 2018 (23 years and 123 days).
-
Markram is one of only 4 South Africans (Richard Snell, Lance Klusener and Robin Peterson are the others) to have opened the batting and bowling in an ODI.
-
Among South Africans, only Smith (17) has reached 1000 Test runs quicker than Markram (18 innings).
Aiden Markram’s Indian T20 League Journey
After starring for the Jozi Stars in the South African League, for St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean League and for the Vancouver team in the Canadian League, it was a slight surprise that van der Dussen didn’t get an Indian T20 League contract until 2022. Then too, there was no bidding war for his services, with the Rajasthan team picking him up at his base price of Rs. 1 crore. He played only a fringe role, though, as the team made the final, and will hope for more opportunities in upcoming seasons.
