Devdutt Padikkal – The Indian Clive Lloyd

Devdutt Padikkal, the 21-year-old left-handed batter from Kerala, is the latest young talent to have burst into the T20 scene. Having kicked-off his first-class career just three years ago, Padikkal earned visibility when he was picked up by Team Bangalore a year later to play in the Indian T20 League. It was a successful 2020 campaign for the young batter, who managed to finish 8th on the list of the most run getters, scoring 473 runs in 15 matches.

The ultimate fruits of his toil came in the form of his selection for the Indian cricket team for the Sri Lanka series in 2021. Though he didn’t get any chance to show his temperament in the ODIs there, he finally got the chance to do so when he was given a chance to wear the blue in the T20s.

Following the limitations put on the teams this year, the Bangalore franchise had to let Padikkal go. He was put up for a base price of ₹2 crores in the mega auction in February 2022. After a fierce bidding involving four teams, Padikkal was finally bought by Rajasthan Team for ₹7.75 crores.

Devdutt Padikkal Awards and Achievements

Still new to the international scene, Padikkal is yet to win many awards for his country. His debut series in Sri Lanka was a mixed bag of sorts, wherein despite his involvement, a young Indian side lost the T20 series to the home team. However, the one day series, of which he was also a part of, was won under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan.

Here are a few of Padikkal’s achievements at the international level:

  • Padikkal is the first among the 21st century-born players to feature for India in an international match.

  • Padikkal has scored over 700 runs in two successive seasons in the domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Devdutt Padikkal’s Indian T20 League Journey

The young batter, who can occasionally bowl off-break, has been one of the greatest finds of the Indian T20 League. It did not take him much time to find a foothold at the big stage and he has found his place among some of the Indian T20 League’s most explosive batters.

He got his first break in 2019, when the Bangalore team decided to spend money on the home-grown player. However, the batter had to wait until 2020 to get his first match for the side. That window of opportunity he got was enough as he finished the season with 473 runs. He spent three seasons with Virat Kohli’s team before being released. The Rajasthan team will now look for brighter things from him.

Here are some of Padikkal’s achievements in the Indian T20 League:

  • Padikkal is the first batter in the history of Indian T20 League to score 3 half centuries in his first four matches.

  • He won the Emerging Player of the Year award in the 2020 edition of the league.

  • He is the third-youngest player to have scored a century in the tournament, with the other two being Manish Pandey and Rishabh Pant. Padikkal achieved the feat at the age of 20 years and 289 days.
