Evin Lewis – Junior Gayle

Evin Lewis started his career at the local Trinidad and Tobago team, playing age-group cricket and winning the Under-19 Championship with the team in 2008. He was also a part of the 2010 West Indian Under-19 World Cup team, after which he made his first class debut in March 2012. The Trinidad youngster caught the eye of the cricketing world in 2013 when he was the top scorer for Trinidad and Tobago in the Champions League. He scored 213 runs at a strike rate of over 141. After playing for multiple franchises all over the world, he finally got his international call-up for the West Indies team in the 2016 World T20 game against Afghanistan in which he replaced the injured Lendl Simmons. The left-hander also got his ODI cap later that same year, making his 50-over debut against Pakistan.

Left-handed batter Lewis opens the batting for the West Indian team. Just like most batters these days, Evin Lewis is a believer of aggressive stroke play and likes to get his runs at a rapid rate. The 29-year-old gained a massive reputation after he smashed 2 T20I centuries. Both of them were against India and he was only the third player in T20I history to do so. His aggressive batting also earned him a spot on the West Indies team for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

The Trinidadian was purchased by Team Mumbai in the 2018 edition of the Indian T20 League. He scored 430 runs in 16 games for Team Mumbai at an average of 27, striking at a rate of 156, across 2018 and 2019 editions. After being put up for sale in this year’s mega auction, Lewis was bought by the newly introduced Lucknow franchise for his base price of ₹2 crores.

Evin Lewis – Key Skills and Strengths

Evin Lewis is mainly known for his power hitting. At the start of the innings, he ensures that the team gets off to a great start, especially with the field restrictions on. That is why he is also referred to as “Junior Gayle.” His two T20I centuries against India showcased to the world his ability with the bat in the shorter format. Apart from his power hitting, the Trinidadian also possesses great capability in finding the gaps and guiding the ball for a boundary in Power Play overs. There’s no doubt why he’s one of the hot properties in the limited-over game.

The inconsistency in Lewis’s game has made the West Indian selectors hesitant to pick him in the Test squad so far. However, there has been an improvement in his temperament and shot selection of late. He now approaches his innings with a lot more composure, which is a very important asset while opening the innings for any team. His mentality now to not give into the lure of taking unnecessary risks during field restrictions has made him a mature player. It doesn’t seem it will take him long to get included in the International Test squad too.

Evin Lewis’s Indian T20 League Journey

After watching Evin Lewis play in the shorter format all across the globe, several teams in the Indian T20 League were eager to buy the Trinidadian. Team Mumbai bagged the left-hander for a whopping amount of ₹3.8 crore. Lewis did not take long to settle into the league. Despite a duck in his first innings, he provided Mumbai with great starts, which they always lacked, and scored his first fifty against Bangalore. Despite missing the majority of the season due to a wrist injury, he still finished as Mumbai’s third-highest run scorer. He scored 430 runs in 16 matches across two seasons for Mumbai. He played for Rajasthan in the 2021 edition of the Indian T20 League but was released this year. He will be wearing the Lucknow jersey this time around.
