Indian T20 League: Delhi Team

Initially one of the strongest teams in the Indian T20 League, Delhi went through 6 barren seasons after topping the points table in 2012. However, their fortunes changed once Ricky Ponting took charge as the coach in 2018. They reached the play-offs in 2019, and went a step better in 2020, losing a closely fought final to Mumbai.

Things have carried on in much the same vein in 2021, with Delhi winning 6 of their first 8 matches. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw have been in dazzling form at the top of the order, and Avesh Khan has outshone even Kagiso Rabada, last season’s Purple Cap winner, with the ball.

Delhi also welcome back R Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer for the second half of the season. The openers have starred so far, but this is a team that can also call on the busy batsmanship of Steve Smith, and the big hitting of Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer. Chris Woakes’ withdrawal was a blow, but Delhi have covered that by recruiting Ben Dwarshuis, who did well in the Australian T20 league.

Pravin Amre is the team’s batting coach, while Australia’s James Hopes guides the bowlers. Mohammad Kaif is the fielding coach.

Another two wins should be enough to take Delhi into the play-offs, and their biggest strength is the depth of resources at their disposal. Amit Mishra and Axar Patel are both frontline spin options alongside Ashwin, and Anrich Nortje took 22 wickets when the UAE hosted the Indian T20 League last season.

Tom Curran, Delhi’s big-money signing at the last auction, has yet to impress, but with their squad much strengthened by returning players, there’s little else that Delhi need to improve on as they eye the play-offs.

Team Delhi Origin

Founded in 2008, the Delhi franchise underwent a rebranding exercise before the 2019 season. Though they’ve hosted home games at other venues like Raipur, their home ground for the most part has been the Arun Jaitley Stadium, formerly known as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

Team Delhi Owners: Indian T20 League

The Delhi franchise is now owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group, both of whom have an equal stake. According to the latest figures published earlier this year, Delhi is the sixth-most valuable franchise in the league.

Rishabh Pant: Delhi Team Captain

Having made his debut for Delhi in 2016 at the age of 18, Pant enjoyed sensational seasons in 2018 and 2019. The last season was relatively disappointing for him, with just one half century, but he showed glimpses of his best during the first half of this season. After taking over captaincy from the injured Shreyas Iyer, Pant led Delhi to 6 wins in 8 games and has been retained in the role.
