Delhi vs Kolkata: Emerging Force against Fading Stars
This contest pits two sides that have journeyed in different directions in recent seasons. Delhi made it to the play-offs in three of the first five Indian T20 League seasons, but then had six miserable years where they finished no higher than 6th place in the points table. However, after a name change and rebranding, they’ve made it to the play-offs in two successive years, including their first final in 2020. When the league was halted in May, they sat atop the table.
Kolkata, champions in 2012 and 2014, haven’t made it to the play-offs since 2018, missing out on the net run rate in the past two seasons. The Gautam Gambhir-Trevor Bayliss captain-coach combination that led them to glory is long gone. Sunil Narine isn’t the mystery-spin destroyer of old, and Andre Russell’s fitness has been an issue in recent seasons.
Delhi, by contrast, rebuilt almost from scratch after the lean years. With Ricky Ponting as coach and a Rishant Pant-led squad, it's a great mix of plentiful international experience and exciting youth. Delhi have moved to the front of the queue of teams aiming to deny Mumbai a hat-trick of titles.
Delhi Team vs Kolkata Team: Head-to-Head Record
This has been one of the most keenly contested rivalries in the Indian T20 League, with Kolkata winning 14 of their 27 matches. The telling stat, though, is that Delhi have won 5 of the last 6 games.
Matches: 27
* Delhi won their only Champions League T20 clash in 2012.
Delhi Team vs Kolkata Team: Head-to-Head History

Delhi boasts an exciting blend of young local talent and established international stars. A well-rounded bowling attack featuring the likes of Kagiso Rabada and R Ashwin is supplemented by an attacking batting line-up bolstered by Shreyas Iyer’s return from injury. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw currently sit first and fourth in the run-scoring charts. Only Harshal Patel has taken more wickets than Avesh Khan (14).
Eoin Morgan has his task cut out to lead Kolkata into the playoffs after 5 losses in 7 games. Their task hasn’t been made any easier by the withdrawal of Pat Cummins, their leading wicket-taker. Tim Southee has been recruited as his replacement. Shubman Gill’s recovery from injury is a big boost.
