Indian T20 League: Hyderabad Team

For half a decade, starting in 2016 when they won the Indian T20 League for the first and only time, Hyderabad were remarkably consistent, making it to the play-offs for 5 straight seasons. However, in 2021 the template that had served them so well was ripped apart. After losing their opening three matches, a comfortable win against Punjab helped them put their first points on the board. But three more defeats, including one in the Super Over to Delhi, have pushed them to the brink of elimination.

The bowling unit, once among the strongest in the league, was severely affected by the injury to T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s patchy form after returning from yet another injury. Rashid Khan has continued to bowl brilliantly, but he has had little support.

As for the batting, almost all the runs were made by four men. Jonny Bairstow, who led the way with 248 runs, will miss the second half of the season in order to focus on his national commitments. David Warner, his opening partner, struggled to find the fluency of old, and scoring fast proved an issue for Kane Williamson, the new captain, and Manish Pandey.

After taking over from Tom Moody after winning the 50-over World Cup with England, Trevor Bayliss coached Hyderabad into the play-offs in 2020. However, repeating that has proved to be a lot harder. He’s currently assisted by two of the game’s legends, though neither was really part of the T20 era. VVS Laxman is the batting coach and Muttiah Muralitharan guides the bowlers.

Without winning at least 5 of their last 7 games, Hyderabad will miss out on the play-offs for the first time since 2015. Unless they win all 7 games, their progress will depend very much on results of other matches. Their dismal net run rate doesn’t help their chances either.

Having largely kept faith in the core group of players from 2020, none of Hyderabad’s auction buys have made an impact yet. Though Mujeeb Ur Rahman may enjoy the conditions in the UAE and revitalize the bowling line-up, it’s hard to see Hyderabad making it into the top 4 this season.

Team Hyderabad Origin

Founded in 2012 after the Deccan franchise was terminated, the Hyderabad team first played in the league in 2013. A few other centers have hosted Hyderabad’s home games, but their base remains the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on the outskirts of the city. They have a formidable record there, having won 30 of their 44 matches.

Team Hyderabad Owners

Though the SUN Group-owned franchise joined the Indian T20 League only in 2013, the latest figures published in 2021 suggest that it’s now the fifth-most valuable franchise in the competition.

Kane Williamson: Hyderabad Team Captain

Since his Indian T20 League debut for Hyderabad in 2015, Williamson has often missed out on games because of the four-foreigner rule. When he played a full part and led the side in 2018, Hyderabad reached the final and he was the leading run scorer with 735 runs. Restored to the captaincy this season, both he and the side have endured a poor run, with 66* in a Super Over loss to Delhi being his only noteworthy innings this season.

Hyderabad Squad: Players Bought in Auction 2021

After releasing 5 players before the Indian T20 League auction in 2021, Hyderabad brought in just 3 new players. The experienced Kedar Jadhav was their most expensive signing, while Mujib Ur Rahman joined Rashid Khan, his Afghanistan teammate, to bolster the spin options.

    • Kedar Jadhav: ₹2 crore
    • Mujeeb Ur Rahman: ₹1.5 crore
    • J Suchith: ₹30 lakh
