Indian T20 League: Punjab Team

Captained by KL Rahul, Punjab have the dubious distinction of being one of the only three Indian T20 League franchises not to win the trophy. But while Bangalore can point to three losses in the final and Delhi to five play-off appearances, all Punjab have to show for 13 seasons of toil is two good years. In the inaugural season in 2008, they reached the semi-finals, and in 2014, they lost to Kolkata in a thrilling final.

Punjab coach Anil Kumble is the only Indian head coach in the league, and Wasim Jaffer, once his teammate in the national side, is Punjab’s batting coach. Jonty Rhodes, the South African legend, is overseeing the fielding, while Damien Wright guides the bowlers. Andy Flower, who once coached England to Ashes glory, is Kumble’s assistant.

Punjab’s batting line-up is extremely top-heavy, with KL Rahul (331), Mayank Agarwal (260) and Chris Gayle (178) accounting for the bulk of the runs this season. Deepak Hooda has chipped in with a cameo or two, but much more is needed from international players like Nicholas Pooran and Moises Henriques. The Covid-bubble-related withdrawal of David Malan, the current No.1 T20 batter, is a blow. But Aiden Markram, who replaces him, is a player of much potential.

On the bowling front, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh have the novelty factor, but as we get to the end of the season, the experience of Mohammed Shami and Chris Jordan will be much needed. Adil Rashid, one of the replacements called up for the Aussie duo of Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith, has also been in excellent form lately.

You have to go back to 2017 for the last time Punjab finished as high as 5th in the points table. Based on the talent available to Kumble, it’s hard to see how they can better that. Here we look at the team, its history and performances down the years in the Indian T20 League.

Team Punjab Origin

The Punjab team was founded in 2008, though it was rebranded in time for the 2021 season. Though they’ve played the majority of their home games at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, they’ve also used venues as far apart as Dharamsala and Indore for home matches.

Team Punjab Owners: Indian T20 League

The Punjab franchise is owned by a consortium that includes Dabur, the Wadia Group, Preity Zinta and the Apeejay Surrendra Group. According to the last released figures, only the Rajasthan team has a lower brand value in the Indian T20 League.

KL Rahul: Punjab Team Captain

Since Rahul joined the Punjab team in 2018, he has been a model of consistency, scoring well over 500 runs in three consecutive seasons. He won the Purple Cap for being the leading run scorer in 2020 and is one of only three Indians to score a century in each of the three formats of the game.

Punjab Squad: Players Bought in Auction 2021

They ended up spending a total of ₹22 crores on the Australian pace duo of Richardson and Meredith. Neither impressed in the first half of the season, and they then joined Malan – a ₹1.5 crore buy – in pulling out of the second half.

    • Jhye Richardson: ₹ 14 crores
    • Riley Meredith: ₹ 8 crores
    • Shahrukh Khan: ₹ 5.25 crores

Punjab Team Facts

Since reaching the semifinal in the first season of the Indian T20 League, Punjab haven’t had much to smile about. Making the final in 2014 turned out to be an exception, followed by more miserable seasons. Here are some interesting facts about the team:

  • Of the franchises currently in the league, only Delhi (46.4) have a worse win percentage than Punjab (46.8).
  • Punjab have performed significantly better in the UAE, winning 11 of their 19 matches.
  • In 2020, KL Rahul became only the third player after Chris Gayle (2012) and David Warner (2015) to win the Orange Cap for being the leading run scorer in a team that didn’t make the play-offs.
