Jos Buttler: The Finisher

Few would forget the innings Jos Buttler and his teammate Ben Stokes played in the final of the 2019 World Cup. The duo not only helped the England national team tie the match while chasing New Zealand’s target of 241 but also paired up to take their side home in the Super Over. By the end of the day, the duo had written their names in the history books of English cricket and had helped break the curse that had been lying heavy on their minds following the disappointment of the 2015 World Cup where they had failed to make it even to the knockout stages.

Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is widely regarded as one of the biggest hitters of the ball in the white-ball format. The Somerset-born player has been carrying the hopes of his nation on his shoulders over the last 10 years. The England national team depend largely on the 31-year-old to finish their innings.

Buttler burst into the scene early, representing Somerset’s Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams. He was handed his international debut in the shortest format of the game in 2011 in the home series against India and the West Indies. Though the series did not go that well for the right-handed batter, he got success during the Sri Lanka tour in early 2012. Subsequently, he was handed his ODI debut and has since never looked back.

The wicketkeeper-batter has also become a regular for England in the longest format of the game and is regarded as one of their most consistent performers. It often happens that Buttler’s innings stands out in an otherwise disappointing England batting line-up.

He is no newcomer to the Indian T20 League scene, participating in the tournament since 2016. He was initially in the Mumbai team’s books but joined the Rajasthan team in 2018. The 31-year-old has been with them ever since and was one of the three players who were retained by the franchise before the 2022 auctions. Buttler has maintained a strike rate of 150 throughout the 6 seasons he has played and has an average of 35.14, which is quite impressive for the T20 format. His highest score of 124 came only last year against the Hyderabad team. The innings was studded with 11 boundaries and 8 sixes, propelling Rajasthan to pile up a mammoth score of 220 runs on the board.

Jos Buttler - Key Skills and Strengths

Cricket isn’t played in the dull one-paced manner anymore. With fans requiring more action in lesser time, the demand for batters that could score at brisk pace is on the rise. Herein fits Buttler. He operates with over 100 strike rate in both formats of the game. Buttler is also known for his skills in finishing an innings no matter how difficult the situation is. Being a bottom-handed player, he prefers the long-on and mid-wicket to hit his sixes. Buttler makes good use of his wrists and closes the face of the bat slightly while making contact with the ball.

Along with that comes Buttler’s skills in wicketkeeping. The inclusion of the right-hander in the batting line-up means that the England coach can include an additional batter or a a bowler to strengthen the respective areas. The 31-year-old is agile behind the wickets and can pull off brilliant dismissals.

Jos Buttler’s Awards and Achievements

Being a late-order batter, Buttler hasn’t had too many chances to play the massive innings as he would have liked to. However, he still has been able to catch the attention of people. His feats haven’t gone unnoticed, helping him win multiple accolades over the course of his career.

Here are some of Buttler’s records and achievements in international cricket:

  • In 2010, Buttler won the Young Wisden Schools’ Cricketer of the Year award.

  • The 31-year-old made it to the ICC ODI Team of The Year in 2018.

Jos Buttler’s Indian T20 League Journey

Buttler is relatively new to the Indian T20 League scene compared to other players. However, within that period of time, he has made a name for himself for being one of the big hitters. The player from England scored his maiden century of the tournament only recently and looks well set for a few more in the years coming up. He can play both unorthodox roles as well as conventional innings.

He has just been retained by the Rajasthan team this year and the franchise will hope that he will be able to repay the faith that they have shown in him.
