Josh Hazlewood: The Bendemeer Bullet

Australia is known for having produced many pace legends. From Dennis Lillee to Glenn McGrath, there have been plenty who have made names for themselves by tormenting opponent batters from around the world. Josh Hazlewood reminds cricket fans a lot about the 52-year-old 6-foot 6-inch bowler from New South Wales. Very much like McGrath, Hazlewood possesses a calm and composed bowling action, and contrary to many of his teammates, focuses more on line and length than on raw pace. Josh Hazlewood plays for Australia cricket team and Bangalore Team in the Indian T20 League.

Back in 2008, when he made his first class debut at the age of 17, Hazlewood became the youngest fast bowler to ever play for South Wales. His ODI debut for Australia happened two years later, though he had to wait for 3 more years to add to that count. The 6-foot 5-inch bowler hasn’t looked back since.

Josh Hazlewood – Key Skills and Strengths

Hazlewood’s biggest strength is his ability to adapt to the conditions. Though primarily a Test bowler who can trouble batters with his short-length deliveries, the 31-year-old can test a batter’s patience by bowling the same line and length over the course of an entire spell. In windy and pace friendly conditions, Hazlewood can bowl deliveries at the fourth or fifth stump and then trust the air to swing the ball onto the batter’s boots.

In this year’s Indian T20 League, the Australian troubled batters with his short-length deliveries that were angled away from the batter. In spite of being struck for an occasional four or a six, Hazlwood stuck to his length and was rewarded in the end. His deliveries would mostly aim the top of the stumps. In the process, he would never be easy to get away as he consistently hit the top end of the bat.
