Lanka T20 Cricket League

The Lanka Premier League is a professional twenty20 cricket league in Sri Lanka played by five teams from various Sri Lankan cities. This is the fourth attempt of having a franchise/club-based domestic league for T20 cricket in Sri Lanka.

The Twenty20 Tournament was the first T20 tournament in the country which ran for seven seasons. It was later revived, with the last edition being held in 2017-18. Inter-Provincial Twenty20 was the next version which ran for multiple seasons before being replaced. It was also revived, with the last edition being held in 2016.

The Sri Lanka Premier League was intended to be the country’s premier twenty20 league when it replaced the Inter-Provincial Twenty20 competition. Its first season was held in 2012. The 2013 and 2014 seasons were cancelled due to lack of sponsorship and organizational problems.

2020 Season

This will be the inaugural edition of the tournament scheduled to take place from 26 November to 16 December 2020. It was originally scheduled to start in August but was rescheduled several times due to the pandemic restrictions. Although the original plan was to hold the matches in Pallekele, Dambulla and Hambantota, now it will be played entirely in Hambantota in view of the players’ safety and health protocols introduced because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The player draft was conducted on 19 October 2020 and included many local and overseas stars of T20 cricket.

Tournament Format

Each team plays with each other twice in a round-robin format in the group stage. Top four teams qualify for the knockout round, which is a direct knockout format.
