Marcus Stoinis – The Muscle Guy

Marcus Stoinis came to prominence as a junior cricketer in Perth in Western Australia. A move to Victoria followed, and an Australia call-up arrived in 2015. Stoinis had made his international breakthrough, thumping a glorious unbeaten 146 against New Zealand that his proud father watched while undergoing chemotherapy.

His first-class displays suffered and hopes of a cherished Test cap evaporated, but Stoinis continued to be an important member of the ODI and T20 teams. He didn’t have the best World Cup in 2019 as Australia’s title defense ended in the semi-final against England, but he played his part as they won the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2021.

Mitchell Marsh: Recent Times

The Punjab team were the first to see glimpses of his all-round talent in 2016, but though he has since played for Bangalore, Delhi and Lucknow as well, the tournament has yet to see the sort of form that he has often displayed for Australia. When the Lucknow team paid ₹9.2 crores for him in 2022, the expectations were sky-high, but after an Indian T20 League season interrupted by illness and fitness issues, Stoinis will look to grab the headlines once again in the 2023 season.

Marcus Stoinis - Key Skills and Strengths

Stoinis made his first big impressions in first-class cricket with the state of Victoria, after moving across the country from Western Australia. But it was in ODIs and T20s that Australia gave him his debuts, impressed by the power hitting and his ability to bowl a heavy ball. The bowling has been used at various stages of a limited-overs innings, including the slog overs, and his batting has been equally versatile. In the Australia T20 League, he has been a punishing opening batter. But for Australia and in the Indian T20 League, he has been used mainly as someone who can provide a late run-burst in an innings.

Marcus Stoinis Awards and Achievements

When Stoinis made his debut for the Australian cricket team in 2015, it was on the back of a stunning Sheffield Shield season where he topped the run charts. Unable to settle in the side then, Stoinis went back and made plenty of runs for Australia A. When given a second chance in January 2017, he didn’t disappoint, smashing a remarkable 146* in a losing cause against New Zealand. Though that remains his only international hundred, his ability to score quick runs anywhere in the order and also chip in with the ball has made him a valued member of Australia’s white-ball sides.

Here are some of Stoinis’ biggest achievements in international cricket:

  • Stoinis’ 117-ball 146* against New Zealand is the second-highest score ever made from the No.7 position in ODIs.

  • Only Shane Watson (15) has hit more sixes in an ODI innings for Australia than Stoinis did that day against New Zealand (11).

  • The 92 that Stoinis and Daniel Sams added against New Zealand in 2021 is a record partnership for the 7th wicket in T20Is.

Marcus Stoinis’ Indian T20 League Journey

Stoinis started his Indian T20 League adventure back in 2016, as a low-budget acquisition for the Punjab team. Though he played only 12 matches across two seasons, his international form was such that the same team felt compelled to pay ₹6.2 crores for him at the 2018 auction. A move to Bangalore followed in 2019, before the Delhi team splashed out ₹4.8 crores for him in 2020. Excellent in the first season and poor in the next, he went back into the auction pool before the 2022 season. This time, it was the new Lucknow franchise that paid an eye-watering ₹9.2 crores for him. A return of just 156 runs and 4 wickets suggests it wasn’t money well spent, and at 33, Stoinis won’t get too many more chances to impress in the league.
