Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal is among those cricketers who emerged in international cricket from the Indian T20 League. Starting his career at a time when Indian cricket was getting used to the explosive batting of the Virendar Sehwag, Agarwal modelled his game on the batting style of Nawab of Najafgarh – focusing more on stroke play. He further added elegance to his batting style and soon came under the spotlight. He was selected to represent India’s Under-19 team and finished the 2010 Under-19 World Cup as the leading scorer.
Unlike a few others such as Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, Agarwal’s international debut for the senior team didn’t happen immediately. He followed the Indian T20 League path to do that. A contract arrived in 2011 as he was given the chance to play for the Bangalore team. The first season was an underwhelming one, but Agarwal had announced his intention to stay put and fight. The second season was a more productive one as Agarwal finished with 225 runs at an impressive strike rate of 142. He is currently a mainstay of the Punjab team, opening the innings on a regular basis for the team with skipper KL Rahul. The franchise went to the extent of investing the highest amount of money (₹12 crores) to retain the services of Agarwal for one more season.
It was not until December 2018, though, that an international debut happened. An untimely injury to Prithvi Shaw meant that Agarwal got the chance to earn a Test cap for his country in Australia. He scored 76 runs in the first innings of the Test in Melbourne. Though he couldn’t make it to India’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup, hopefully he will get enough chances to showcase his batting skills at big events in the future.

Mayank Agarwal – Key Skills and Strengths
Agarwal’s coach describes him as someone who can be flexible in terms of his batting position. Though primarily an opener, Agarwal has the ability to slot in at any position and score runs. He is a natural stroke player and has 2 double centuries to his name already. Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that both Agarwal and Gill need to be given chances together to open the innings for India to see who is better.
Though he has been going through a bad patch of late in Test cricket, there is no denying the fact that Agarwal has the ability to bounce back and shine again. One has to remember the fact that Agarwal made his mark at the international scene with a few blistering innings up the batting order in the pacey conditions of Australia.
Agarwal prefers to hold his bat vertically up with the toe end of it facing the sky. This makes the bat lighter to hold, helping his wrist play. However, there are risks in that technique as he often lands on his front heel and can be late in timing the ball. However, working on that, Agarwal is trying to rectify his mistakes and is looking to be a better batter in the near future.
