Mohammad Nabi — Mr. President
In recent years, Afghanistan have risen on the international cricketing stage and one of the major reasons for this has been Mohammad Nabi. The 37-year-old right-hander is one of his country’s finest cricketing talents, proving his worth both with the bat and the ball. He helped Afghanistan win the ICC World Cricket League Division Five and the ICC World Cricket League Division Four in 2008, where he was adjudged the Man of the Tournament. He made his ODI debut in 2009 against Scotland, which was his country’s first-ever ODI, following the success in the 2009 ICC World Cricket League Division Three and having gained ODI status.
The Afghan all-rounder captained his side in the nation’s first-ever major international ODI tournament. The Afghans also played under his captaincy in the 2014 ICC World T20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup. He also made his Test debut in his country’s first-ever Test match, against India in 2018, retiring the very next year from Test cricket, playing his final Test match against Bangladesh.
Mohammad Nabi plays the shorter format of the game for various franchises all over the world. In 2017, he became the first Afghan to be sold in the Indian T20 League, where Team Hyderabad bought him for ₹30 lakh. Nabi was sold to the Kolkata team for his base price of ₹1 crore in the mega auction held in February 2022. At the 2021 T20 World Cup, Nabi led the Afghanistan team to give a performance exceeding all expectations.

Mohammad Nabi - Key Skills and Strengths
One of Nabi’s greatest strengths is his versatility with both the bat and the ball. No matter what situation the team is in, he can bat at any position, be it consolidating the game up the order or big-hitting at the death. The off spinner is pretty handy with the ball too and one of the most economical bowlers in the shorter format of the game. He sticks to the stumps with a constant line but with varying lengths and pace, making it difficult for the batters to go after him. This very all-round ability attracted Team Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League to go for the Afghan, for whom he has also taken a 4-wicket haul.
Apart from this, the 36-year old has also been a successful captain of Afghanistan, under whose leadership they played their first-ever international ODI tournament in the 2014 Asia Cup. He also led the Afghans in the 2014 ICC World T20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Mohammad Nabi’s Indian T20 League Journey
In the 2017 edition of the Indian T20 League, following his performances in the shorter format of the game, Mohammad Nabi was bought by Team Hyderabad for his base price of ₹30 lakh. He was the first Afghan cricketer to be sold at the Indian T20 League auction. He didn’t do much in the first season, having played just three matches. However, he was still effective and economical with the ball, conceding less than 6 runs per over. Despite his under-par first season, looking at his performances elsewhere, Hyderabad retained the all-rounder in the 2018 edition of the league. He had his best season that year, scoring 115 runs and taking 8 wickets in the eight matches that he played. This included a 4-wicket haul against Team Bangalore, helping his team to victory. He will be seen in the purple jersey of Kolkata this season after the franchise invested ₹1 crore for his services.
