Mohammed Siraj – The Hyderabad Express

Not a popular player until 2016, Mohammed Siraj came into the limelight in the 2016-17 season of the Ranji Trophy. The Hyderabad-born pacer took 41 wickets in nine matches as he helped Hyderabad reach the quarter-final of the Ranji Trophy that season. He finished as the third-highest wicket taker in the tournament.

Having a difficult childhood, with his father being an auto-rickshaw driver and his mother being a housewife, the 27-year-old started taking cricket seriously only after 2015. He made his first class debut for Hyderabad in the 2015-16 season of the Ranji Trophy. In 2017, Siraj was included in India’s T20I squad to play against New Zealand, marking his T20I debut. He made his ODI debut against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on 15th January 2019. Following his consistent performances with the white ball in the shorter format, Siraj was included in India’s Test squad against Australia after Mohammed Shami was ruled out due to injury. He made his Test debut on 26th December 2020 and also took a 5-wicket haul in the same series. Though he missed out on the 2021 T20 World Cup, he will hopefully get enough chances to showcase his skills at big international tournaments in the future.

Mohammed Siraj made his debut in the Indian T20 League in the 2017 edition after Team Hyderabad bought him for a sum of ₹2.6 crore. After being released, he was bought by the Bangalore team the very next season and he has been an integral part for the team ever since. He was one of the three players that the Bangalore team retained for the 2022 edition. They spent ₹7 crores for his services.

Mohammed Siraj – Key Skills and Strengths

Siraj is mainly known for his economical bowling. His main strength lies in bowling straight and sticking to the line of the stumps. He is an important bowler for Power Play overs as he restricts the scoring of runs. He was the first bowler to bowl two consecutive maiden overs in the Indian T20 League. Another important aspect in his bowling is his inswinging delivery with the new ball, which causes havoc for the batters. Apart from his potential with the ball at the start of the innings, the Indian pacer is also pretty handy during the death overs. His full-length yorkers and deceptive slower deliveries not only help restricting the flow of runs, but also help him take wickets. Siraj is pretty effective with the red ball too. Along with swinging the ball both ways, his ability of bowling long spells has made him one of the regulars in India’s Test squad lately. He is on course to be one of the biggest names in international cricket with his hard work and potential.

Mohammed Siraj’s Awards and Achievements

Here are a few of Mohammed SIraj’s achievements in domestic cricket:

  • He was the highest wicket taker for Hyderabad (41) in the 2016-17 season of the Ranji Trophy.

Mohammed Siraj’s Indian T20 League Journey

After his eye-catching performances in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy, the Hyderabad-born pacer was recognized by Team Hyderabad. They bought him for a whopping amount of ₹2.6 crore for the 2017 edition of the Indian T20 League. He struck 10 wickets in mere six matches for the South India-based team at a strike rate of 13, which included a 4-wicket haul too, which to date, is his best bowling figures in the league. Due to his expensive and erratic bowling, he was released by Hyderabad next season. However, Team Bangalore were impressed by the potential on offer and bought him the next season for ₹2.6 crore. He failed to impress in his first few games, but once he started performing consistently, he became Virat Kohli’s favorite and has been an important part of that bowling attack since. The 27-year-old has taken 36 wickets since joining Bangalore and is well on course to spit fire on the pitch yet again this season after being retained by the franchise. He will also be very keen on adding one Indian T20 League title to his repertoire.

Here are some of Siraj’s biggest achievements in the Indian T20 League:

  • He was the first bowler to bowl two consecutive maidens in the Indian T20 League.

  • He picked up a 4-wicket haul for Hyderabad in his debut season in a match against Gujarat in 2017.
