Shubman Gill - The Future Batting Star
One of the few batters to have emerged from India’s Under-19 team is Shubman Gill. Still new to the international scene, the Punjab-born batter has got what it takes to make it big at the world stage. Batting at number 3, Gill scored a total of 372 runs at an average of 124 as India won the Under-19 World Cup in 2018. He was adjudged the Player of Tournament for his contributions. A keen learner and an obedient student of cricketing legend Rahul Dravid, Gill’s promotion to the senior team was only a matter of time. That happened less than a year later against New Zealand in January 2019.
His Test debut, in Australia, was also a special occasion to mark. The India team had been thrashed in the first Test in Adelaide. Gill made his debut in the second one. It was a memorable series for the youngster as his contributions led the way to an injury-hit team winning the 4-match series 2-1.
Joining the Kolkata team back in 2018 Gill had been in their books until only recently when they had to let him go ahead of the mega auction for the Indian T20 League 2022. The Kolkata team put a lot of faith in him when it came to giving their innings a speedy start. He will be donning the Gujarat team’s jersey this season after the new entrants invested ₹8 crores on the right-handed batter.

Shubman Gill – Key Skills and Strengths
Shubman Gill has a knack for timing the ball. Hardly any of his shots come off the edge of the bat. The ball makes a sweet sound when it comes off Shubman Gill’s bat. Though he is going through a somewhat lean patch at the moment, hardly anyone has any doubt about his coming out of it soon. Gill can also be explosive when needed.
Gill has a knack for stepping back on his crease and allowing the ball to come on to the bat. This allows him to negotiate short pitch deliveries on bouncy pitches. However, it also comes as a disadvantage for pitches that do not offer bounce. While Gill learns the trade of his game, he is expected to make the necessary changes to his batting style soon. In fact, the changes have already been seen as Gill has started playing more and more deliveries on the front foot.
Besides his skills with the bat, Gill is also an exceptional fielder. He has been used in the short leg position fruitfully in Test matches.
