England vs Australia – The Oldest Rivalry with Extra Spice

The Ashes loom at the end of the year, but before that England and Australia take on each other in the T20 World Cup. For the first time, England, currently the 50-over World Cup winners and ranked No.1 in T20Is, start as favorites. This contest, to be played in the UAE in October-November 2021, reminds us of the final of the 2010 edition of the tournament, which England won convincingly against the red-hot favorites.

In fact, this is the only major trophy to have eluded Australia, with that appearance in the 2010 final being their only one. England revitalized their white-ball cricket under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy after the 2015 World Cup disaster, while Australia have seldom been focussed on building a strong T20I side. This England-Australia cricket match will have more than pride at stake. The West Indies, the defending champions, and South Africa are two of the other teams in the group, and only two will progress to the semi-finals.

Eoin Morgan: England Captain

Morgan is the only link between England’s two global triumphs, the World T20 win in the Caribbean in 2010, beating Australia in the final, and the World Cup win on home soil in 2019, when the old rivals were beaten in the semi-final. Though he is from Ireland, no one has represented England in more ODIs and T20s than Morgan. If he can go one better than in 2016, it will add one more chapter to his white-ball-legend story.

Aaron Finch: Australia Captain

The quest to convert Finch into a Test opener never worked out, but in the limited-overs formats, Finch has been one of the finest players of the past decade. His century against England set the platform for their 2015 World Cup win, and except for a spell when Steve Smith was in charge, it’s Finch that has led the team in T20Is and ODIs. This is one trophy Australia have never won, and at the age of 34, Finch will know he won’t get many more chances to correct that anomaly.
