Pakistan vs New Zealand – Former Champs Face Rising Stars
In the first two editions of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan and New Zealand met in the semi-finals and Pakistan emerged victorious on both the occasions. In the UAE, which has served as Pakistan’s home base for most of the past decade, Pakistan will seek a second title, but they are up against a New Zealand team that’s currently ranked No.1 in 2 of the 3 formats.
Led by Shahid Afridi’s all-round brilliance, Pakistan won this trophy in 2009. But New Zealand, who have lost the last two 50-over World Cup finals, have found a happy knack for raising their game in big tournaments. This Pakistan-New Zealand cricket match will play a big part in deciding who advances from a group that also includes India, the 2007 champions.

Babar Azam: Pakistan Captain
It’s a measure of how consistently excellent Babar has been that he’s currently ranked in the top 10 in every single format. Top of the rankings in ODIs, he’s currently No. 2 in T20I rankings. Pakistan haven’t reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup since 2012, and they won it only once, in 2009. Azam’s batting class will be pivotal to the team’s hopes of ending that drought.

Kane Williamson: New Zealand Captain
For all their heroics at the 50-over World Cup – they have reached the semi-finals or better 4 times in a row – New Zealand have yet to crack the code in the T20 World Cup. Williamson’s experience of leading in the Indian T20 League will come in handy as New Zealand bid to win only their second global trophy in white-ball cricket after the ICC Knockout in 2000. They will also need Williamson to contribute more with the bat in the only format he hasn’t quite mastered.
