Tim David: The Singaporean Journeyman

Singapore is a name that is yet to gain popularity among cricket fans. It still lags way behind in the race to be considered a competitive force in the cricketing world. However, that hasn’t prevented domestic T20 teams from investing in players from that country. The Bangalore team showed the way when they snapped up relatively unknown Singapore batter Tim David for the second leg of the 2021 Indian T20 League. He made his debut on 24th September, thus becoming the first player to represent his country in the tournament.

The Mumbai team followed the cue by entering into a bidding war with the Kolkata team for the services of the Singapore all-rounder in the 2022 Indian T20 League auction. Starting at a base price of ₹40 lakhs, David finally went on to be sold for a resounding ₹8.25 crores. There were as many as six teams involved in the bidding. In the process, the 25-year-old became a more valuable player than the likes of Pat Cummins and David Warner. So what is the Singapore-born player going to bring to the plate?

Tim David has played 14 T20I matches, scoring a total of 558 runs at an average of 46.50, which bodes well for the price he has got. The 6-feet-5-inch-tall all-rounder has a strike rate of 158 to go with it and has gone past the 50-run mark on 4 of those 14 occasions. Along with that comes David’s ability with the ball. He has taken 5 wickets for his country so far.

David’s biggest skill is his ability to hit the ball hard. He can hit the ball big and when he hits it, it stays hit. There is an increasing demand for big hitters in the Indian T20 League. There is a reason why the likes of Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell are favorite among the fans. And David is likely to be added to that list.

Tim David - Key Skills and Strengths

David belongs to the league of batters who can hit the ball big. That is why there is such high demand for the right-hander. He can hit the ball all around the ground and can increase the team’s scoring rate at any point in time. In spite of playing with the traditional V grip, David can still outmuscle the bowlers and is good against both spin and pace deliveries. Having a high backlift, he is the kind of batter that likes to finish a game for his side. Another advantage of having David on the team is that he is good for both spin and pace tracks and handles short pitch deliveries quite well.

Along with that comes his ability with the ball. Though the tall batter isn’t used that frequently in bowling, he is well capable of breaking partnerships at crucial juncture of a match.

Tim David’s Awards and Achievements

David is yet to add significant achievements to his repertoire, having been allowed a limited number of opportunities at the international level with the Singapore cricket team. Still 25, he has many more years left in his career and will get more chances to put his name in the record books.

Here are some of David’s accomplishments so far:

  • Tim is placed 5th in the list of batters to have the highest strike rate in T20 cricket.

  • He is the first player from Singapore to play in the Indian T20 League.

Tim David’s Indian T20 League Journey

David has one solitary appearance against his name in the Indian T20 League. That happened when he was called up as a replacement by the Bangalore team for the second leg of the tournament in the UAE in 2021. Following an impressive opening partnership between Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, David came out to bat toward the end of the innings and managed a solitary run in three deliveries. That isn’t reflective of what he can bring to the table this season. David himself will be more than keen on justifying his ₹8.25-crore price tag.
