Tymal Mills: A Seamer with Great Potential
The explosive nature of the T20 format means that bowlers are often put to the sword, no matter how disciplined they are over the course of their 4-over spells. However, the bowlers earn their money by bringing something new to the plate and giving batters reasons to think. When the Mumbai team decided to invest in a rather unknown Tymal Mills in the grand auction held in February 2022, they might have put something of the same into their thought process.
In spite of the solitary season with the Bangalore team back in 2017, Mills remains a relatively unexplored bowler in theIndian T20 League scene. The 29-year-old seamer from Yorkshire brings raw pace to the equation, having the ability to make life difficult for batters. He is one of the most innovative thinkers in the shortest format of the game and is one of England’s most explosive pacers at the moment. However, Mills hasn’t been able to explore his full potential owing to his injuries. In fact, injuries have kept threatening his career, not allowing him to explore the bigger formats of the game. He was diagnosed with congenital back condition with his spinal cord and vertebrae being placed unusually close to each other.
However, the 29-year-old has kept playing domestic cricket not just in his native land but also abroad. He has represented teams such as Essex, Sussex, Chittagong, Auckland and Brisbane among others and is perfectly capable of adjusting his playing style according to the conditions.
Mills has been given the opportunity to represent his country at the international level too and he played 12 T20 matches for the England cricket team between 2016 and 2022. He was included in the squad for the T20 World Cup that was held in the UAE in 2021. He had a great tournament there, becoming England’s joint-highest wicket taker before picking up an injury yet again. He was forced to leave the pitch midway through his second over against Sri Lanka and couldn’t carry on for the rest of the tournament, finishing with 7 wickets from three matches.
Mills’s solo season in the Indian T20 League saw him feature in 5 matches, wherein he managed to pick up an equal number of wickets at an average of 30.81. After a gap of four years, Mills is back in India and his new team will hope to get fruitful results from the investment they have made in him.

Tymal Mills - Key Skills and Strengths
Mills combines genuine pace with swing. Being a left-handed pacer, he often becomes difficult for batters to read. He is a death-bowling specialist and has the potential to improve further. His economy rate at the death of the innings has been the best since 2016. However, the player has himself admitted that he makes a conscious effort not to become too predictable in his bowling. He has been working on his yorkers, both wide and straight. He tries to vary his bowling angle, both round the wicket and over the wicket and tries to aim it on the batter’s hips or thighs.
However, workload management has been a big issue for him. England cricket team skipper Eoin Morgan has stated that Mills would be better at focusing on domestic and franchise cricket and will be considered during the World Cup years. Mills can bowl slower, measured deliveries too.
Tymal Mills’s Awards and Achievements
Mills hasn’t had too many opportunities in international cricket owing to injuries. Therefore, he still has time left in his career to add to his repertoire.
Here are some of his achievements so far:
-
Mills was England’s joint-highest wicket taker in the T20 World Cup 2021 before being sidelined due to an injury.
-
Mills holds the record for being one of the fastest English bowlers.
Tymal Mills’s Indian T20 League Journey
Mills has been involved in the Indian T20 League for just one season and didn’t get too many chances to impress. He finished the season with 5 wickets in five games at an economy rate of 8.58. He finished with the best figures of 2/31 against the Kolkata team that year.
This time around, though, the seamer will hope for a new start after being the subject of a bidding war that involved the Punjab team and the Hyderabad team.
