When he turned up for selection to the age-group teams in Jammu and Kashmir, he had next to no experience in domestic cricket. Umran’s raw talent and the consistently high pace was enough to convince the franchise to retain him before the 2022 mega auction at a cost of ₹4 crores. Considering that Rashid Khan was among those they chose to let go, it was a huge leap of faith from the team. An Indian cap soon followed, though he has yet to find his feet in the international arena.

Umran Malik - Key Skills and Strengths
Umran Malik’s biggest strength is something very few players have – genuine, raw pace. He has an effective shorter ball and can land his yorkers too, but even the length deliveries at over 150 km/hr can be too much for many batters to handle. There’s been little evidence of him swinging the ball, or getting movement off the seam. There are also no marked pace variations. If he can acquire those skills as well, he could be unstoppable at the international level for India.

Malik made his debut for the Indian cricket team soon after the Indian T20 League finished in 2022. But both against Ireland and England, his bowling was pretty wayward and expensive, marked by nervousness. His best performance came in the 2023 home T20I series against Sri Lanka, where he picked up 7 wickets in 3 matches with the best figures of 3/48.
Umran Malik’s Indian T20 League Journey
Umran Malik was one of the players the Hyderabad team before the 2022 Indian T20 League mega auction retained instead of the experienced duo of David Warner and Rashid Khan. Needless to say, it was a big gamble, but one that was justified when Malik walked away with the Emerging Player of the Year award, after a haul of 22 wickets from 14 matches. The highlight was undoubtedly against Gujarat, where Malik ended up with the stunning figures of 5-25, with 4 of his victims clean bowled.
