Wanindu Hasaranga – Sri Lanka’s New Hope
Wanindu Hasaranga first came into the limelight with a spell of 3-34 against England’s Under-19s team at the Under-19 World Cup in 2016, as Sri Lanka made the semi-finals. A year later, the senior selectors, impressed mostly by his aggressive batting, had thrown him into the deep end during an ODI series in Zimbabwe. Wickets with the 14th, 15th and 16th balls of his career amply illustrated why their faith was justified. Wanindu Hasaranga plays for Sri Lanka cricket team and Bangalore Team in the Indian T20 League.
Since then, Hasaranga has gradually made himself an indispensable part of Sri Lanka’s white-ball teams. There were promising signs on Test debut in South Africa, but by and large, the longest format has been tougher to adapt to for him. There have been no such difficulties with the white ball, with eye-catching displays against Pakistan and the West Indies being the precursor of a superb display at the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2021.
Wanindu Hasaranga: Recent Times
Hasaranga finished the tournament with 16 wickets, including 10 in the Super 12 stage of the competition. That included the first hat-trick by a Sri Lankan bowler in the tournament’s history, against South Africa. Such performances briefly took him to the top of the ICC’s T20I bowling rankings, and he ended the year with a record tally of 36 wickets.
By then, he had made his debut in the Indian T20 League as well, coming in as a replacement player for the Bangalore team in the second half of the 2021 season. He made no impact in the 2 matches he played, but with a new leadership team in place for the 2022 season, Bangalore went all out to sign him at the Indian T20 League auction.
This time, with Yuzvendra Chahal having moved to the Rajasthan team, Hasaranga was very much the team’s frontline spinner. He lived up to the expectations, taking 26 wickets in 16 matches, including a remarkable 5-18 against Hyderabad. Bangalore reached the play-offs again.

Wanindu Hasaranga - Key Skills and Strengths
Though Hasaranga first caught the eye with his bowling at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, it was his stroke-filled batting that saw Hasaranga selected for the senior side a year later. As his strike rates illustrate, he remains an aggressive batter lower in the order. With the ball, he has had considerably more success in T20Is, where batters look to go after his attacking leg-spin. In the longer formats, batters have been fairly successful in playing him out. He’s a brilliant fielder as well.
Wanindu Hasaranga - Awards and Achievements
When picked to play for the Sri Lankan cricket team back in 2017, in an ODI series in Zimbabwe, it didn’t take Hasaranga long to make an impact. He finished with a hat-trick on debut, only the third player to achieve the feat. There have been telling spells in ODIs as well.
Here are some of Hasaranga’s biggest achievements in international cricket:
-
In 2021, he broke Ajantha Mendis’s record for the most wickets in one edition of the T20 World Cup, taking 16.
-
He was named in the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year and T20I Team of the Year for 2021.
-
Along with South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi, he holds the record for the most T20I wickets in a calendar year (36 in 2021).
Wanindu Hasaranga’s Indian T20 League Journey
There was a time, nearly a decade ago, when half a dozen Sri Lankan players were regulars in the Indian T20 League. These days, Hasaranga is the flag-bearer for his country in the world’s most popular cricket league. Drafted in as a replacement for Australia’s Adam Zampa for the second half of the 2021 season, Hasaranga’s involvement with the Bangalore Team amounted to just 2 balls faced and 6 bowled. Despite that, the franchise beat off fierce competition from the Punjab and Hyderabad teams to sign him for a whopping Rs. 10.75 crores at the 2022 mega auction. This time, he more than justified his selection, taking 26 wickets at an outstanding economy rate of 7.54.
