Return of La Liga and the Premier League

Return of La Liga and the Premier League

We have some fantastic news for fantasy football fans in India! After a 3-month break, Spanish and English football leagues are set to return in June. The Spanish Football Association has announced that the fixtures will resume on the 11th of June and the English Football Association has announced the date of the 17th of June for the return of top-flight English football, subject to all safety protocols being followed.

It is essential for us to look back at the leagues and the performance of the teams and players playing in them to be well prepared for the upcoming fixtures. Let’s start with La Liga and then move on to the Premier League.

La Liga, starts on 11th June 2020

Barcelona is the front runners to win the La Liga title for the 3rd year in a row when they resume the season with a trip to Mallorca. They continue the title race with a 2-point lead over their rivals R. Madrid. Secondly, they have Messi in their team! He is currently the league’s top scorer and top assist provider with 19 goals and 12 assists. Picking him in your team should be a no-brainer. Even though he has been struggling with a thigh injury in the last two training sessions, Barcelona are confident of having him back in shape by Sunday. The team is also boosted with the return of their star striker Suarez, who has been battling a knee injury for the past 5 months. Along with him, Barcelona stars such as Ter-Stegen, Pique, and Busquets are looking in fine form in the training sessions since returning from the lockdown. The tricky bit for Barcelona will be their run of fixtures where they are going to battle against the likes of Sevilla, Villareal, Bilbao, and A. Madrid, all of whom are in fine form. There’s also the Catalan derby, which could be tricky as they face Espanyol, who are desperate to avoid relegation.

The only formidable challenge to Barcelona at present is Real Madrid. After a huge summer transfer window last year, which saw them acquiring the services of Hazard, R. Madrid struggled to perform with Hazard getting injured early in the season. Reports claim that Hazard has regained his fine form, which saw him become a legend at Chelsea. He scored a fine hat-trick in a practice match last week. Along with Hazard, even Marco Asensio is making a comeback after sitting out for the majority of the season with an injury. With Benzema and Bale also ticking in the practice games, R.Madrid will boast of an impressive attacking line-up for their upcoming fixtures. R.Madrid will have a relatively easier set of fixtures going ahead with only two formidable opponents in the form of Bilbao and Sociedad. The fixtures combined with Zidane’s (R.Madrid Coach) impressive end of season form will make the title race very interesting.

Here are few rising stars to keep an eye on in the upcoming fixtures. They will be looking to impress and could prove to be the differential in your team.

  • F Torres (Valencia)
  • M Odegaard (Sociedad)
  • A Isak (Sociedad)
  • M Oyarzabal (Sociedad)
  • M Merino (Sociedad)
  • A Fati (Barcelona)
  • V Junior (R.Madrid)
  • T Kubo (Mallorca)
  • O Rodriguez (Leganes)
  • M Salisu (Valladoid)

Here are a few stars who would be looking to make a name for themselves after an underwhelming start to the season:

  • E Hazard (R.Madrid)
  • L Suarez (Barcelona)
  • J Felix (A.Madrid)

The Premier League starts on 17th June 2020

The Premier League is back! Or at least it should be on June 17. The plan is still subject to government approval but barring any further setbacks, English football will return from its coronavirus-enforced break with Manchester C vs. Arsenal and A Villa vs. Sheffield U.

These Wednesday openers will be followed by a full round of weekend fixtures (June 19-21), with a provisional end date for the campaign set for July 25. There are 92 outstanding matches and while they will be played behind closed doors, all will be broadcast live. There will have been exactly 100 days between the Premier League's last game -- Leicester's 4-0 win over A Villa on Mar. 9 -- and the scheduled return of English football's top flight. Here are a few things to look forward to when the games finally resume.

Liverpool fans have endured a nervous wait as the debate around how the season will end heated up but the 30 years’ wait for a Premier League title finally seems to be over as the side sits 25 points clear of second-placed City at the top. The Reds just need two wins to clinch the title but can do it in just one game if City loses to Arsenal on Wednesday. While the race for the Championship might be over, 7 teams will still be fighting for a spot in the European club competition next season. Leicester, City, Manchester U, Sheffield U, Wolves, Tottenham & Arsenal have very little difference between them and it would be interesting to see how the season shapes up.

Players to watch out for in the remaining 11 fixtures:

  • P Pogba (Manchester U)
  • J Grealish (A Villa)
  • D Silva (Manchester C)
  • K D Bruyne (Manchester C)
  • C Taylor (Burnley)
  • F Fernandez (Newcastle)
  • M Doherty (Wolves)
  • E Stevens (Sheffield U)
  • B Fernandes (Manchester U)
  • TA Arnold (Liverpool)
  • N Pope (Burnley)
  • B Leno (Arsenal)
  • H Kane (Tottenham)
  • K Tierney (Arsenal)
  • Brooks (Bournemouth)
  • R Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea)
