Continuing the good run from the first ODI, India defeated West Indies by 44 runs in the second ODI to clinch the series 2-0 on Wednesday with one game in hand. The final ODI will be played on Friday afternoon.
Winning the toss and putting India to bat, the West Indies bowlers did well to dismiss Rishabh Pant (who opened the innings for the first time in ODIs), Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli cheaply. Suryakumar Yadav, (64) with help from KL Rahul, Washington Sundar and Deepak Hooda, helped India to post a total of 237 runs in their 50 overs. In the second innings, it was the Prasidh Krishna show as the visitors minus skipper Kieron Pollard failed to bat their allocated 50 overs for the second match running.
India vs West Indies 2022: 4 Key Moments That Led to India’s Victory in the Second ODI
1. KL Rahul’s Making Claims for the No. 4 Spot
With the top 3 dismissed cheaply, KL took the responsibility of playing through the Indian innings. But unfortunately, he was dismissed because of a run-out for 49 runs. But his 91-runs partnership with Suryakumar for the 4th wicket laid the foundation for a late-innings charge and got a challenging total on the board for India.
2. Suryakumar Yadav’s Stood Tall on a Bowlers’ Day
The bright spot in India’s batting setup was the innings played by Suryakumar Yadav. Coming in early in the 12th over, he along with Rahul weathered the good bowling spells before going after the attack. Surya stood tall and brought up his second ODI half century (64 off 83). However, he got out sweeping to Akeal Hosein in the process to increase the scoring rate in the 39th over.
3. Useful Little Camoes by Deepak Hooda and Washington Sundar
After all the specialist batters were back in the pavilion with just 177 runs on the board and more than 10 overs remaining, it was left to the likes of Sundar and Hooda to take the total beyond 225 and more. Washington made 24 off 41 and Hooda made 29 off 25 to propel India to a par total of 237 runs. Eventually, it was the difference between a win and a loss.
4. Prasidh Krishna’s Best ODI Performance
On a fresh Ahmedabad track that offered extra bounce and zip throughout the game, Prasidh implemented the short-ball strategy and relentlessly dug the ball into the surface. It was awkward for the West Indies who could not stitch any meaningful partnerships. He removed Brandon King and Darren Bravo in his opening spell. Later, he took the key wicket of stand-in skipper Nicholas Pooran and put the finishing touches with the final wicket of Kemar Roach. His figures were 4/12 in 9 overs including 3 maidens.
