Team India Announces 18-man Squad for South Africa Test series

BCCI has named an 18-member squad for India’s upcoming Test series against South Africa. The tour will have three Tests and as many ODIs, starting 26th December, 2021. The opening Test will now start on 26th December at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. India are currently placed 3rd in the points table of the 2021-23 World Test Championship, with 3 wins from 7 games.

Earlier, the tour was scheduled to get underway on 17th December and consisted of 3 Tests, 3 ODIs and 4 T20Is, but it had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis. The T20I series will now be played at a later date in the year.

Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as India’s permanent ODI captain, after taking over the T20I captaincy in the recently-concluded New Zealand series. Additionally, he has also been named as the new vice captain in Tests.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, and Rishabh Pant are also returning after taking a break in the home series against New Zealand, while KL Rahul returns to the Test squad from injury. Shreyas Iyer has kept his place after a sensational Test debut. Under pressure, Ajinkya Rahane has retained his place. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have been left out of the squad due to injuries.
