The India vs West Indies series has been hit by massive news, with as many as 7 members of the Indian contingent testing positive for the Covid-19 virus on Wednesday. Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Navdeep Saini (reserved) are the four players who have contracted the virus and tested positive after three rounds of testing upon their arrival in Ahmedabad.
The above-mentioned players are a part of the Indian team taking on the West Indies in the 3-match ODI series, starting from 6th February. Their participation in the ODI series and the tour to a large extent seems to be in doubt now.
Apart from the players, fielding coach T Dilip, security liaison officer B Lokesh and massage therapist Rajeev Kumar have also been infected with the virus. All the members who tested positive are already being isolated from the others.
Mayank Agarwal and Ishan Kishan Added to the India ODI Squad
With regular vice-captain KL Rahul also unavailable for the first ODI, this news is a major blow for the home team, at least for the opening match. With no other opener available in the squad, Mayank Agarwal and Ishan Kishan have been added to the ODI squad for the series. Other replacements, if required, will be named shortly.
All Members of the West Indies Unit Tested Negative for Covid-19
The West Indies team, coming from Barbados after a hard-fought 3-2 T20I series win over England, confirmed that all of their members have tested negative on their arrival to India.
“We were all negative before we left Barbados. And all negative on our arrival tests at the airport on Tuesday in Ahmedabad. We are in room isolation on a separate floor to the Indian team as per the protocols,” an official from CWI told.
As of now, there is no threat to the series. The first of three ODIs between India and the West Indies is scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 6th February. The ODI leg will be followed by three T20Is, which are scheduled to take place at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, starting on 16th February.
