WEST INDIES VS INDIA: 2nd ODI

N. Pooran, the West Indies captain, spoke after the first game of how the 3-run loss had felt like a win for his struggling team. But that doesn’t alter the fact that the West Indies have now lost 7 ODIs in a row. To make their chances of a comeback worse, J. Holder, former captain and experienced all-rounder, has been ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.

Team India suffered a setback of their own before the first game, with R. Jadeja sustaining a knee injury. But that gives A. Patel a chance to impress, while the top order also has a new look with the likes of R. Sharma, V. Kohli and K.L. Rahul either rested or is still unfit to play.

On the bowling front, this is a big game for P. Krishna, who has taken just 2 wickets in his last four ODIs. A. Khan and others wait in the wings, as a clutch of bowlers compete for the third seamer’s spot behind J. Bumrah and M. Shami. The yorkers M. Siraj bowled at the death were instrumental in India holding on to win, but they’ll be conscious of how close West Indies came to pulling off a big chase.

India have now won 6 straight games against the West Indies cricket team since a loss in Chennai in December 2019, but they still have some way to go to match the 9 consecutive victories West Indies put together between 1983 and 1987. Those days, when West Indies were the dominant force in world cricket, seem very far away now.

TOP FANTASY PICKS FOR WI VS IND 2nd ODI Match

Team West Indies

  • K. Mayers gave West Indies hope with a blistering 68-ball 75 in the first game. It was his second 50-plus score in 11 ODI innings, though he can certainly score faster than his overall strike rate of 84.42.
  • N. Pooran made almost a run-a-ball 25 in the last game with two big sixes. Given the responsibility he carries and the recent poor ODI record of West Indies, he looked confident and measured with his approach. Pooran was involved in the dismissals of Gill and Iyer with his proactive fielding as well.
  • G. Motie dismissed two set batters in S. Dhawan and S. Iyer in the first game. His ODI career may only be four matches old, but 8 wickets and an economy rate of 3.65 suggest the 27-year-old might be around for a while.

Team India

  • S. Gill scored his first half century in four ODI innings in the last match. With R. Sharma and K.L Rahul not playing this series, this is his chance to establish himself as the back-up opener before next year’s World Cup.
  • S. Iyer continued his good form against the West Indies in the last match, making his 6th half-century in 7 innings. He has now scored 400 runs at an average of 57.14 and a strike rate of 99 against the Caribbean team.
  • Y. Chahal has now taken 15 wickets from his eight ODIs against the West Indies. The economy rate of 5.18 is excellent given that he’s often asked to bowl when the batters are looking to go big.
