Indian T20 League 2022 Mega Auction – Date, Teams, Players, Latest News

With the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction almost upon us, the excitement is unparalleled among fans, be it to watch the action live or fantasy cricket . This will be the 4th time a mega auction is taking place in the league’s history. The biggest question now is what is the auction date, which are the new teams and how much money does each team have? 

Indian T20 League Auction Date

The league now consists of 10 teams (first time after 2011), with the introduction of two new franchises, Lucknow and Ahmedabad. While the schedule is yet to be finalized, the 15th edition of this glittering tournament is reported to begin on 27th March 2022. It has been officially confirmed that the mega auction will take place on 12th and 13th February. There will be a total of 74 matches to be played in this edition. So mark your calendars everyone!

Indian T20 League 2022 Mega Auction Rules

  • The existing eight teams are allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players. The players can be either two Indians and two overseas or three Indians and one overseas player. However, the franchises have the freedom to retain one, two, three or four players, depending upon their requirements (maximum of two uncapped players).
  • Both Lucknow and Ahmedabad teams had the opportunity to draft 3 players from the list of players who were not retained by the existing franchises. They have a specified combination of two Indians and one overseas player.
  • The purse for the 2022 mega auction is set at ₹90 crore, an increase from the ₹85 crore budget of the previous auction.

Chennai Team decided to retain their talisman leader MS Dhoni. Ravindra Jadeja and the likes of Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad are the other 3 retentions around which the rest of the squad will be built for the upcoming season.

Team Mumbai Retention List

The 5-time champions Mumbai team had some tough choices to make for their 4 retentions. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah continue to stay with the team. Kieron Pollard, the team’s longest serving player, and Suryakumar Yadav also stay with the franchise for the 2022 edition.

With KL Rahul parting ways with the franchise, the Punjab team decided to back Mayank Agarwal for this new start. Uncapped pacer Arshdeep Singh, who has been impressive for the franchise is the only other retention.

Indian T20 League 2022 Start Date

The 15th edition of the Indian T20 League is expected to start on 27th March 2022. The matches will most likely be played behind closed doors and fewer close proximity venues - potentially Mumbai and Pune.

A total of 1214 players, including 312 uncapped players, have registered their names for the 2022 mega auction. Out of these, 41 players are from the associate nations.
